Answers

1) Q When is the best time of day for students to see the school counselor?
A We ask that students who need to see the counselor fill out a "pink slip" and then the grade level counselor will send for the student at an available time. Students indicate on the slip if the situation is about a schedule issue, an emergency or "other". We then assess when to see the student. Students MAY NOT come to the guidance office without permission from their teacher.

2) Q What kinds of things can my child talk about with the school counselor?
A While we do not do "therapy" at school, the school counselors are available to work with students on a broad range of topics such as friendship issues, study habits, respecting adults, dealing with frustration, decision making and planning for the future.

At CTMS, we have small groups throughout the year on topics such as self esteem, grief & loss, study skills and peer relationships. We are able to offer many of these services through parterships with the social work program at Shepherd University and other local agencies.

We also offer referral information for other counseling-related services to both students and parents.

3) Q How do I get in touch with my child's school counselor?
A Leaving a telephone message on voicemail or sending an email through the website link are probably the most efficient ways to get in touch with the school counselor. In most cases, your message will be returned within 24 hours.

Each counselor has more than 300 students on her caseload and we also spend daily time in team meetings, working on scheuding and grading issues, enrolling students as well as attending other meetings and working with students one-on-one and in groups. So, while we welcome visits from parents, it is often difficult to catch us with a free moment if you have not scheduled an appointment ahead of time.

4) Q What do I need to bring in order to enroll my student at Charles Town Middle School?
A Please bring a birth certificate, immunization records, and the most recent report card/grade report. If your student receives special services or has an IEP/504 Plan, copies of these documents are also helpful. The parent enrolling the student will need to present government issued photo identification (drivers licence, passport, etc).

Students registering from an out of state school will also need a TB test . You may contact the Jefferson County Health Department (1948 Wiltshire Rd., Kearneysville, WV 25430. 304-728-3306) or a physician of your choice for this testing. Please keep in mind that it takes several days between the administration of the test and the results and students may not begin school until the results have been verified in writing.
